We rightly figure that some people need an extra helping hand at times – they might have an urgent need in a difficult time. But we need to be careful not to overlook our mates who we mistakenly figure never help.
In my experience, my mates are not divided between those who need help and those that don't. The true divide is between those whose hurt is obvious and those whose pain is hidden beneath a façade. We also need to face up to our own hurts. We can present a positive persona to those around us, but may be facing significant challenges. Even as we wipe away the tears of others, we may be crying on the inside.
I'm reminding myself today, that REM was right – everybody hurts, including me. And that's ok.
